Open mountain huts

      → Mountain huts under construction

      → Trekking across the "Serra"

      → GR-222: Artà- Lluc

The trail GR-221 is also called the "Ruta de la pedra en sec" (the dry-stone wall trail), because most of the trail follows the old stone-paved paths between villages and farms. And also because most of the trail crosses the typical Majorcan mountain landscape: the olive- tree terraces built without cement (dry-stone wall technique). The trail will cross the mountain range "Serra de Tramuntana" from Port d´Andratx (in the southwest) to  Pollença (in the northwest). Along the trail, the dry-stone wall building college (Departament de Natura i Medi Ambient del Consell de Mallorca which has taken over from FODESMA) is restoring the path and several buildings which will be used as mountain huts.

☻ The trail is already open across public land and on public paths, but 92 % of the  "Serra" is private property and that makes the completion of several parts of the trail problematic.

The GR-221 crosses the following areas:

       * Port d´Andratx- Sant Elm (Area 1): . Not signposted. There is a public path.

       * Sant Elm- La Trapa (Area 1): Not signposted. The path crosses many private areas, but it is open. The old monastery of La Trapa is being turned into a mountain hut

.

       * La Trapa- Coll de sa Gramola (Area 1): Not signposted. The path crosses many private areas, but it is open.

       * Coll de sa Gramola- Coma d´en Vidal: problematic.(Area 2) Not signposted. The trail follows the road Andratx- Estellencs (Ma-10) for two kilometres from Coll de sa Gramola to the "Pla de s´Evangèlica". Afterwards it crosses the road a couple of times and follows the old road from Andratx to Estellencs (on the left side of the road, between km 101,9 and km 101.8). The future hut "Coma d´en Vidal" isn´t near the path but a 45 minute walk uphill.

       * Coma d´en Vidal- Estellencs (Area 2): Not signposted. The public path is overgrown.

         * Estellencs- Banyalbufar- Esporles (Area 3): SIGNPOSTED, but the trail has been closed around Es Rafal, between Estellencs and Banyalbufar. Until a deviation is ready you should take the road Ma-10. The government is planning to buy the finca Planícia which could be another alternative.   + Information

        * Esporles- Valldemossa (Area 4): Not signposted. There isn´t a public path between the two villages and the trail crosses all the time private properties. It could be open on 2008.

       * Valldemossa- Deià (Area 5): Not signposted. The trail crosses the private property of Son Gual to the public land of Son Moragues. Then it takes the beautiful ridge "Camí de s´Arxiduc" up to the "Cingles de Son Rul.lan", where it again enters private property until Deià. In the village itself, one old house "Can Boi" has been turned into a mountain hut (opened on june 2006)

        * Deià- Refugi de Muleta (Area 6): SIGNPOSTED . From Deià, it goes downhill, and near the cove (Cala) it goes uphill, takes the road from Deià to Sóller for just 300 metres, and in Can Puigserver you find the sign to the right of the road. It now follows the old Arab path to Sóller. In the Capella de Castelló the path to the mountain hut Muleta and to Port de Sóller is already signposted: on the chapel (which will be restored), the path turns left, takes the main road for 50 metres and then the small paved road to "Bens d´Avall". After one kilometer it turns to the right and then to the left before the Finca "Muleta Gran" to reach the mountain hut, which has been open since May 2002.

         * Refugi de Muleta- Port de Sóller- Sóller (Area 6): SIGNPOSTED. There is a road from the mountain hut "Muleta" to Port de Sóller. But the trail goes back to the Finca "Muleta Gran" and down to the Hotel Rocamar. From here it  follows the left side of the "torrent" (the normally dry river bed) to Can Ai, near Sóller.

          * Sóller- Font des Noguer (Area 7): SIGNPOSTED. It takes the path to Fornalutx as far as Binibassi and from here to the right to the tiny village of Biniaraix. From here it goes along  the "Barranc de Biniaraix", one of the nicest landscapes of the island to the farm "L´Ofre". Afterwards the trail crosses the pass "Coll de l´Ofre" and goes downhill to the Cúber dam and to the spring "Font des Noguer" (which is above the water channel in the middle of the picnic site).

         * Font des Noguer- Mountain hut "Tossals Verds" (Area 8): SIGNPOSTED. The trail follows the water-channel for 30 minutes and then crosses the pass "Coll des Coloms". Shortly afterwards, there is a junction where you should come back if you want to go to Lluc. For the mountain hut you take the trail to the right.

          * Tossals Verds- Son Amer (Lluc monastery) (Area  9): SIGNPOSTED. You have to walk back to the junction (1'5 hours) and turn to the right. You cross the forest up to the pass "Coll des Prat". Here you turn left, downhill, on a bad path which reaches the pass "Coll des Telègraf", turns right and goes uphill again after 10 minutes. Near the top of "Puig des Galileu" you cross a small pass and the trail goes to the left. After a plain, it goes downhill steeply taking a path which has been restored. Afterwards, you take a forest track, cross the main road and arrive at the monastery of Lluc. You can sleep here or  in the mountain hut "Son Amer" (open since september 2007), 15 minutes away.

           * Son Amer- Pollença (Area 10): SIGNPOSTED. The trail goes uphill to the left to the pass "Coll Pelat", to the source (where water is being bottled) and to Binifaldó. From here you take the old path from Lluc to Pollença.

Two sections are finished:

Many trails which are to be restored are the old transhumation trails. They were used for taking animals from the flatlands to the mountains (before summer) and in the oppposite direction in autumm.

Two new  sections from Caimari to Lluc: For one kilometre the trail crossed the road and went alongside it: in this section, a new trail has been built in 2007 which leads underneath the road from Son Canta to the picnic area of the Comuna de Caimari. Here, it crosses the road below the bridge and takes a dirt track to "Sa Llonganissa" and the "Bretxa Vella".

Also from Coll de sa Batalla, the GR goes right on the streets of the "Urbanització des Guix" and across the forest to the mountain hut Son Amer and Lluc.
