      → GR 222: Artà- Lluc

The GR 221 is the ‘Ruta de pedra en sec’, as much of the route takes advantage of the old cobbled paths (which communicated the villages and the estates on the Serra) and also because the most emblematic landscape is the rows of olive trees on terraces with dry-stone walls. The GR (135 km) will cross the Serra de Tramuntana from the Port d’Andratx (in the south of the island) to Pollença (in the north) and some buildings have been restored as  mountain hostels. Some alternative sections (156 km) have been planed which will go by way of Peguera, Es Capdellà, Castell d’Alaró, Bunyola and Cala Tuent. The work restoring the paths and the buildings is being carried out by the Department of the Environment of the Consell Insular de Mallorca. The sections opened follow public paths and cross public land, but the fact that most of the Serra is private property will delay the opening of some sections. It is planned as 8 stages with a mountain hostel at the end of each:

1-Port d’Andratx- Sant Elm- La Trapa, 3h 45’

2- La Trapa- Coll de sa Gramola- Estellencs, 7h 15’

         3- Estellencs- Esporles, 5h

4- Esporles- Deià (Refugi de Can Boi), 6h 30’

5- Deià- Port de Sóller, 3h 15’

6- Port de Sóller- Sóller- Cúber reservoir- Refugi de Tossals Verds, 8h

7- Ref. de Tossals Verds- Lluc, 6h

8- Lluc- Pollença (Refugi del Pont Romà), 4h 45’

At the end of 2008, the GR was completely signposted from Deià to Pollença with 5 mountain hostels already open. Further south, the section: Coll des Pi- Estellencs- Banyalbufar- Esporles- Coll de sa Basseta is also marked. For the unsignposted sections, it is advisable to have the maps  Alpina Mallorca (1:25.000): ‘Tramuntana Nord ‘, „Tramuntana Central’ and ‘Tramuntana Sud’.

The GR 221 crosses the following areas:

       * Port d´Andratx- Sant Elm-La Trapa (Stage 1): Not signposted. The path crosses many private areas, but it is open. The old monastery of La Trapa is being turned into a mountain hut Not signposted. The path crosses many private areas, but it is open.        * La Trapa- Coll de sa Gramola (Stage 2): Not signposted. The path crosses many private areas, but it is open.

       * Coll de sa Gramola- Coma d´en Vidal: (Stage 2) Not signposted. The trail follows the road Andratx- Estellencs (Ma-10) for two kilometres from Coll de sa Gramola to the "Pla de s'Evangèlica". From here it will cross the mountain range of S'Esclop on the way to the future hut "Coma d'en Vidal".

       * Coma d'en Vidal- Estellencs (Stage 3): Not signposted.

        * Estellencs- Banyalbufar- Esporles (Stage 3): SIGNPOSTED, but the trail has been closed around Es Rafal, between Estellencs and Banyalbufar ( + Information)

        * Esporles- Valldemossa (Stage 4): Signposted from Esporles and Coll de sa Basseta and from Sa Comuna to Valldemossa.

       * Valldemossa- Deià (Stage 4): Not signposted. The trail crosses the private property of Son Gual to the public land of Son Moragues. Then it takes the beautiful ridge "Camí de s'Arxiduc" up to the "Cingles de Son Rul.lan", where it again enters private property until Deià. In the village itself, one old house "Can Boi" has been turned into a mountain hut (opened on june 2006)

        * Deià- Refugi de Muleta (Stage 5): SIGNPOSTED . From Deià, it goes downhill, and near the cove (Cala) it goes uphill, takes the road from Deià to Sóller for just 300 metres, and in Can Puigserver you find the sign to the right of the road. It now follows the old Arab path to Sóller. In the Capella de Castelló the path to the mountain hut Muleta and to Port de Sóller is already signposted: on the chapel (which will be restored), the path turns left, takes the main road for 50 metres and then the small paved road to "Bens d´Avall". After one kilometer it turns to the right and then to the left before the Finca "Muleta Gran" to reach the mountain hut, which has been open since May 2002.

         * Refugi de Muleta- Port de Sóller- Sóller (Stage 6): SIGNPOSTED. There is a road from the mountain hut "Muleta" to Port de Sóller. But the trail goes back to the Finca "Muleta Gran" and down to the former Hotel Rocamar. From here it  follows the left side of the "torrent" (the normally dry river bed) to Can Ai, near Sóller.

          * Sóller- Font des Noguer (Stage 6): SIGNPOSTED. It takes the path to Fornalutx as far as Binibassi and from here to the right to the tiny village of Biniaraix. From here it goes along  the "Barranc de Biniaraix", one of the nicest landscapes of the island to the farm "L'Ofre". Afterwards the trail crosses the pass "Coll de l´Ofre" and goes downhill to the Cúber dam and to the spring "Font des Noguer" (which is above the water channel in the middle of the picnic site).

         * Font des Noguer- Mountain hut "Tossals Verds" (Stage 6): SIGNPOSTED. The trail follows the water-channel for 30 minutes and then crosses the pass "Coll des Coloms". Shortly afterwards, there is a junction where you should come back if you want to go to Lluc. For the mountain hut you take the footpath to the right.

          * Tossals Verds- Son Amer (Lluc monastery)- Stage 7: SIGNPOSTED. You have to walk back to the junction (1'5 h) and turn to the right. You cross the forest up to the pass "Coll des Prat". Here you turn left, downhill, on a bad path which reaches the pass "Coll des Telègraf", turns right and goes uphill again after 10 minutes. Near the top of "Puig des Galileu" you cross a small pass and the trail goes to the left. After a plain, it goes downhill steeply taking a path which has been restored. Afterwards, you take a forest track, cross the main road and arrive at the monastery of Lluc. You can sleep here or  in the mountain hut "Son Amer" (open since september 2007), 15 minutes away.

           * Son Amer- Pollença (Stage 8): SIGNPOSTED. The trail goes uphill to the left to the pass "Coll Pelat", to the source (where water is being bottled) and to Binifaldó. From here you take the old path from Lluc to Pollença. A bridge has to be built. Until then, tou must walk 800m along the main road.
